LARKTALK  - NOTES ON URBAN LIFE AND THE ENVIRONMENT

I write about what I see on the street and in my daily travels, what I may reading or just what sparks my interest at any given time. With degrees and practice in landscape architecture and Urban Design (Harvard), fifteen years of writing for design and art magazines much of that may be about the environment, travel and lifestyle.

July 2011
Outside the local landmark, Bondi Junction Veterinary Hospital, my daughter noticed this sculpture wrapped around a street pole. We’ve both heard of these knitted sculptures but it was the first time that we’ve ever seen one.

Firstly, it’s quite unobtrusive and secondly it’s very cleverly done and a great addition to the public domain; it doesn’t detract from the sign’s function nor does it pose a distraction to drivers.

This must be one YARNBOMBING example  from the recent WORLD WIDE KNIT IN PUBLIC DAY on June 10, 2011 held in Martin Place by WOOLMARK’S . According to one WEBSITE, this was the first International World Wide Knit Day and there are numerous websites where people upload images of the day and also knitting groups.

OPINION June 2011

For once I’m in agreement with ELIZABETH FARRELLY. Her article inTHURSDAY 23 JUNE’S SYDNEY MORNING HERALD, was one of the few coherent, concise arguments that I’ve read of hers. As there are so few voices speaking/writing about the urban environment from a design/architectural viewpoint in Sydney and Melbourne in the mainstream press we are left pretty much with her lone voice and that of Alan Saunders hosting BY DESIGN on RADIO NATIONAL.

The article “Give up an en suite or world goes down toilet”, is a clear exposition on how
TONY ABBOTT and others are obfuscating the issue of long term survival with the immediate impact on people’s hip pocket.

It’s another political stunt to scare people into voting Liberal at the next election rather than thinking about our values, our children and that of future generations. Like Farrelly says, this is about behavioural change rather than raising money. We are an indulgent society regarding our use of space and resources and we have our heads stuck in the sand.
